Urbano Menem originally gained the nickname "Mr. Congeniality" as an ironic nod to his fiery personality. A series of second place finishes has given new meaning to the moniker however. Much like the lovable losers who win Miss Congeniality at beauty contests, Menem has come up short again and again this season.
Including the most recent Essex Tour, Menem has five second place finishes this season without a single win. What makes it all the more galling is that on three of those occasions, he has lost to his vaunted rival, Truman Vancil.
Menem frequently has words to say to Vancil and his others competitors, not typically friendly pleasantries. He is considerably more cagey when it comes to talking to the press. Observant Anglo journalists have noted how much better his English was last season, when he was winning.
Menem's controversial personality doesn't seem to fit with a traditionally laid back Whalers team. Respected veteran Solomon Henschel is one of "patrons" of the peloton, while the talented Viggo Monsen is noted for his humble outlook and sportsmanship.
"Everyone here loves Urbano," insisted Team Whalers manager JackO. "He lights a fire under our entire squad and, to a man, they all know he would do anything for the team."
